  • To start, you must have a Google Analytics account and sign in.
  • Upon accessing your dashboard, click the Admin menu and access your desired view.
  • Select “Content Grouping” on the View column.
  • Next, click “+New Content Grouping.”
  • A prompt will ask you to enter the name you want for the grouping.
  • Choose which content grouping method you’ll use, depending on your preference (tracking code, extraction, or rules).

Group by tracking code

  1. Select “Group By Tracking Code.”
  2. Under this menu, choose “Enable Tracking Code” and ensure it’s enabled.
  3. Choose an index number (1-5) to label your content grouping.

Group using extraction

  1. Select “Add Extraction” to extract pages based on their URL, title, and name.
  2. Under this menu, choose among “Page URL,” “Page Title,” and “Screen Name.”
  3. Enter the value for the pages you want to include in the specific content group.

Group using rule definitions

  1. Select “Create A Rule Set” to open the rules editor page.
  2. Next, name each content group you have.
  3. On the Define Rules menu, choose among “Page URL,” “Page Title,” and “Screen Name.”
  4. Choose a matching option and enter the value for the pages you want to match.

Where to find content grouping in Google Analytics

Content groupings can be used in a whole host of different reports in Google Analytics including:

  • All Pages report
  • Landing Pages report
  • Behaviour flow
  • Events report

All pages report

Navigate to the all pages report by clicking on Behaviour > Site Content > All Pages

Selecting your content grouping gives you an insight into how well a certain section of the site is performing. Does your blog section have a high bounce rate? To get to the landing page report head to Behaviour > Site Content > Landing Pages

Behaviour flow report

Navigate to behavior flow, then select your content grouping from the content directory drop down, change the dimension to default channel grouping and choose organic search.
